What cookies are and what they are used for

A cookie is a text file that is stored, by the website the User is navigating, on the User’s terminal and then sent back to the same website on any follow-up visit.

Cookies are classified: a) based on the subject storing them on the User’s terminal, depending on whether the latter also manages the website that is being visited (so-called “first-party cookies”) or another subject does it (so-called “third-party cookies”); b) based on the purpose of each cookie: some of these cookies allow the website that stored them to remember, for example, the preferences expressed by the User during navigation, or to make a purchase, or to verify the User’s identity (so-called “technical cookies”), other cookies allow the Website that stored them, to monitor the User’s navigation also with the purpose to send advertisements and offer services in line with the preferences the User expressed while navigating (so-called “profiling cookies”). Only the use of profiling cookies requires prior User consent. Bernardelli’s website uses first-party technical cookies and third-party profiling cookies, as stated below.

Technical Cookies

Technical Cookies are only used with the purpose of “transmitting a message via an electronic communication network, or when they are absolutely necessary for the performance of a service expressly requested by the User”.

Technical Cookies can be categorized as:

  • Browsing or session cookies, which ensure normal navigation and use of the website (allowing, for example, purchases or authentication to access restricted areas);
  • Analytics cookie (for example Google Analytics) are assimilated to technical cookies where they are created and used directly by the Website Operator in order to gather information, in aggregated form, on the number of Users and on how they utilize said Website;
  • Functionality cookies allow the User to navigate according to a set of user selected criteria (for example, language, products selected for purchase) in order to improve the service rendered to the User.

In this context, particular emphasis is laid on the fact that the Google Analytics tool is used on this Website to collect IP addressed of the visitors in order to provide an indication of their geographical location. This practice is referred to as IP geolocation. Google Analytics does not provide any information concerning actual addresses. Due to the use of a method referred to as masking IP, Google Analytics communicates information so that only a part of the IP address is used, for purposes of geolocation, instead of the whole address. It is possible to download a browser app to disable Google Analytics at the address https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout. The add-on communicates with the Google Analytics JavaScript (ga.js) to indicate that information about the website visit should not be sent to Google Analytics.

The add-on for the deactivation of Google Analytics does not prevent information from being sent to the navigated Website.

Consent of the interested party is not required for the use of technical cookies.

Profiling cookies are aimed at creating user-related profiles to send advertising messages that meet the preferences shown during the visit, or to improve the User navigation experience.

Bernardelli’s website uses third-party profiling cookies (it does not use its own profiling cookies).

These cookies – listed below and for which User consent is required – are used for advertising services, targeting for advertising purposes, personalization of contents, performance tracking and optimization.
