Contemporary with an edgy twist: the idea of moving away from the conventional notions of beauty and fashionability while creating something completely new is at the heart of the entire Rei Kawakubo’s world, from the main collection to the sub-lines. For the next season, the Japanese designer’s eye traveled further afield, drawing inspiration from the lively Mickey Mouse patterns and playing with unexpected combinations – a blend of various fabrics and textures - to revamp the classic Comme des Garçons staples. Experimentation suits Kawakubo, allowing her emblematic avant-garde vision to feel bolder and free: in a mix and match of dissonances and juxtapositions, the iconic creative director deconstructs geometrical volumes, A-line gowns, and cape jackets and mixes prints and materials to create a smart game of eye-catching styles.
